Pictures! Pictures! Pictures!

No, I haven’t uploaded any new ones. Well, except for the Preds vs Red Wings pics. I’ve been considering using other picture services such as Snapfish and Flickr to post pictures. They’re pretty fancy with the way the pictures are sorted and tagged and shared. Unfortunately, Snapfish requires you to be registered to even view pictures, but Flickr does not. Flickr seems pretty viable. It doesn’t have any sort of heirarchical structure to it, but it does allow sets and flat-level tagging. The down side is that I can’t really integrate either product into PhragMunkee.com like we’re all used to. I don’t know what to do with them all!

Read on . . .

Pros of leaving pics at PhragMunkee.com:

  • More control over pictures
  • Pictures in directories / heirarchical
  • Integration with site

Cons of leaving pics at PhragMunkee.com:

  • HUGE space requirements
  • Lots of bandwidth
  • A bit of a burden on an already slow server

Pros of moving pics off-site:

  • Tagging
  • Order prints and other products
  • Feedback / Comments
  • Social networking
  • Less stress on server and bandwidth

Cons of moving pics off-site:

  • Not as much control
  • No or minimal integration with site
  • The site is really all about the pictures anyways

So, if I move off-site, what do I choose?

Flickr Pros:

  • Excellent interface
  • Tagging
  • Comments
  • Pseudo-API for blogs and sites
  • RSS
  • No registration required
  • Easy sharing with friends
  • Variable picture sizes (even full-res!)
  • Easy linking to album

Flickr Cons:

  • Monthly upload limit
  • All flat tagging — nothing heirarchical
  • Can’t easily integrate into PhragMunkee.com

Snapfish Pros:

  • No monthly upload limits (that I know of)
  • Easy sharing with friends

Snapfish Cons:

  • Can be slow sometimes
  • Registration required
  • Interface is less-than-desirable
  • Limited to their picture sizes
  • Linking to your album kinda sucks
  • No tagging, just albums

So, it is tempting to take the gallery off-site if I can still manage to integrate it within the site. I kinda like counting the gallery stats and seeing what’s new and when at a quick glance on the left.

Oh, and you can take a look at my Snapfish account (requires registration).

Comments? Suggestions? Damnations?
